The Deconstruction

Getting to know myself is by far the most important project of my college career. Without this essential first step, how am I to know what I want out of a future career?

Thanks to my college experience, I have been able to deconstruct myself, my personality, my desires, and my dreams. Through this deconstruction and a couple helping hands of The Myers & Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Strong Interest Inventory, I was able to solidify the knowledge of my own traits, skills, and strengths.

The MBTI classified me into a category of ESFJ signifying extroversion, sensing, feeling, and judging. Accordingly, I focus my attention on the outer world, I take information through the five senses focusing on here and now, I make decision based on my values and subjective concerns, and I take a planned and organized approach to life. The latter sentence gave me a new way to look at myself; however, here is some things I already knew: I am conscientious and loyal, I focus on the needs of others, and I am sociable, enthusiastic, energetic, and insanely organized.

The Strong Interest Inventory put light on the Social, Enterprising, and Artistic part of my personality. It showed me that my interest are clustered around people, teamwork, business, leadership, and self-expression. Whereas, my skills and values are within verbal ability, listening, cooperation, marketing, communication, culture, and creativity.

In the end, my road of deconstructing myself led me to value close relationships, helping others, security, and challenge when it comes to a future career path.

The Dream

The second step for me is picking a career path. I have thought long and hard about this, changing my mind a million times, and just when I thought I have found the answer–it wasn’t right. However, with the help of the resources I have found on my own campus and the interviews I have conducted with professionals in diverse fields, I have come upon a career path I have grown to be interested in. A career in Advertising/Marketing.

This field offers a stable and traditional work environment where my hard work and contributions will be felt. It will be work where I will be able to see the tangible results of my efforts and its positive effects on people. This will also offer me the opportunity to establish meaningful relationships by working with a variety of people on a day to day basis.

Additionally, here is a list of the activities that most excite me about pursuing this career path:

  • Planning programs to generate interest in a product or service (which simultaneously exposes the teamwork that is needed in this field as on a daily basis there is a need to work with art directors, sales agents, financial staff members, and peers)
  • Inspecting layouts and other promotional material (I consider myself a perfectionist so an eye for detail is already a trait I have developed)
  • Plan and prepare advertising promotional material (planning and organizing are things that stand high on my ability chart)
  • Confer with clients to provide marketing advice (as long as it involves contact with amazing individuals count me in)

The Pitch

Third and final step…. This is where I convince you that I will excel in this field, that this is the field that will suit my personality and my well-being most….so here comes the pitch.

Reflecting back on my personality results and my own deductions about myself here are my own strengths that will pair up well with an Advertising/Marketing career. I take enjoyment out of meeting, communicating, and building relationships with diverse individuals. I possess great energy for the activities and projects I am involved with. I have a keen eye for detail, and am hard-working, organized, and team oriented. The latter suits best for the work I plan on doing. I personally work hard as a cooperative team member. I am organized and follow through on all my projects with great time management, responsibility, and productivity. If you’re still not convinced, read on.

My own skills and the work activities of an adverting or marketing manager complement each other. It takes active listening, social perceptiveness, time management, critical thinking, communicating with others to succeed in this field. These skills together with my dependability, attention to detail, imagination, adaptability, and flexibility will lead me to thrive in this field.

And if I fall short on possessing a certain skill, you better believe that I will work hard to achieve it. For now, I will have my enthusiasm make up the difference.
